On December 5, 2018 NM PED Secretary Christopher Ruszkowski visited Magdalena Schools. He titled his visit “meeting the masters in Magdalena” on twitter. He visited several classrooms including Boyd Lewis, Jim Sauer, Rebecca Ramzel, Michaela Marquez, Christopher Backstroms and Amanda Allen. He joined the high school for lunch and laughed while the 9th grade girls told him what they really wanted in their lunches – his words “so you don’t want the healthy meal!” He met three of our board members, Sharon Harris – President, Linda Montoya – Member, and Marva Brunson – Member. They were able to share some wonderful stories about our great community and I believe they conveyed the passion and love we have for Magdalena. Secretary Ruszkowski also enjoyed meeting Jaxson Mirabal and Kyle Julian and as Student Council president and vice president, they showed the Secretary and his assistant around our beautiful school.
Real World Experience for Students taking College Level Course.
As part of the dual credit program offered to high school juniors and seniors in conjunction with Western New Mexico University in Silver City, six students have had their first experience of caring for people in their pursuit of careers in healthcare.
Shown left to right, Desirae Zamora, Senaida Romero, Nizhoni Shondiin, Nicole Bilbo, Asjah Apachito, and in the back Ty Vicente.
Students acknowledged the experience as “amazing”. They were asked to write a brief statement about their experience. Here is what some of them wrote:
“Got to do some things I thought I wouldn’t be able to do. It was a great learning experience.”
“…it was heartwarming to see all the work and effort that was being shown for the elderly who couldn’t take care of themselves. The staff is like a family to each other as well as the residents and I’d like to be a part of that one day.”
“I got to do a lot of hands on and worked with the men and women who take care of the residents on a daily basis. It was a great experience.”
“…being able to help the people there and hear their stories really made it personal. I can’t wait to carry on my career in the nursing field and help people every day just like I did at Good Sam’s. I look forward to going back!”
