6th Grade Readings

Hello incoming Middle Schoolers!! Welcome to my class!! We’re going to read some awesome stories & books this year!!

We’ll start with one of my all-time-favorites!

It’s an amazing story by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, “The Medicine Bag,”

I put it on my 8th Grade Readings site. You should definitely go there and read it!! It’s about a middle-school boy who lives in the city but his grandpa, who lives on the reservation far away, comes to visit unexpectedly. It’s so good!! You’ll be glad you read it!!

Read it and email me some feedback of what you thought about the story.

Have a good day/week/rest of your vacation! See ya soon!!

Good Morning/Ya at eeh/Buenos Dias  6th Graders!!!! How are you?!!

I hope you and your families are doing great!!

So when we left we had just completed the 9 weeks and finshed up all of our Call of the Wild assignments, and we were about to start reading the novel Flush! It’s an interesting and fun adventure about a boy, his little sister, and the rest of their family and how they deal with someone who is destroying their environment. The book is by the same author who wrote Hoot (which you may have seen the movie or read the book; if you want something fun to watch, then watch Hoot! It reminds me of Holes for some reason—good, adventurous and funny).  Anyway, back to Flush. If you go to youtube and search “Let’s Read Flush,” then the first 4 videos you see will be this book being read by a man who reads it very well!! In a way that makes it fun to listen to! He even stops sometimes and lets you know what he’s thinking about while he reads and everything—pretty neat. So listen to part one (it’s 27 minutes long, so if you want to listen only 10 minutes at a time then that should be fine—but it’s exciting enough that you can probably listen to it all at once—but whatever works for you), and then write down a plot summary (what happens in the book) as well as how you feel about it.

  • Also, let me know anything that you are reading that you find interesting. I’ll post some books I liked a lot when I was younger & some that I’ve read/heard about recently and maybe you can find them online. If not, the Magdalena Library has a great wifi signal that you can use around there and it’s a nice place to hang out. There are ebooks, kahn academy links, and all kinds of interesting materials!! I talked to the lady at the Socorro Public Library, and they are closed, but she said that you can go to their website and they have links like “Brainfuse” the one with the boy reading a book, and a bunch of other resources that are free for you to use as well.
  • Finally and most importantly, one thing that you can do that actually helps how you feel, is to write down your daily activities & feelings!!

One of my favorite quotes is “Reading is Inhaling (breathing in) and Writing is Exhaling (breathing out)”

So Exhale! Write down how you’re feeling, what you’re doing, anything at all!! I’ll conisider that your weekly journal writing (which we haven’t done in quite a few weeks).

Well take care of yourselves!! Be good!! Go Outside & get some exercise!! and then sit under a tree and read (or write)  :)

If you need anything, then just email me at George.Goggans@magschools.us

Take Care!!  Goggans

Monday, April 20 –  Thursday, 23rd!!  I hope you all are doing great!! I’ve only recieved a couple of your journal writings!!

The standards for the next 20 days ask you to practice & be able to “create clear & well-developed writing”

So Let’s Write!! Tell me how you’re doing!! What’s going on right now (get it, write now)!! Not only will you feel better, but it will help you become a better writer and give me something to read! I want to know what’s going on with you. So you can write on paper and take a picture of it and email it to me, or you can just email me and write as you go along; however you choose to do it is fine with me. I tried to call everyone last week and talked to some of you, and you all were willing to tell me what you were doing (someone was making a pigeon trap—that would be interesting to write about!), so just write it down. Pretend you’re writing me a letter or however you want to do it. Maybe create a story about a person who’s trying to survive in a world with a deadly disease going around. Whatever you want to write—just Write!! Look what Bon Jovi (he’s an old rocker from the 80’s & 90’s. You probably have heard a song or two from him. If not, then just ask your parents/grandparents). Anyway, look what he’s doing with students’ writing and what he says about how important it is to write things down! :)  https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/get-jon-bon-jovi-live-in-your-classroom-plus-five-other-things-that-lifted-our-spirits-1.4230442

We’’ll catch up with Flush next week. But if you finish writing, then go ahead and keep listening & reading  the novel. It’s really good!! see above directions of where to find it on youtube!!

Well take care! I miss you all!! Write & let me know how things are going!! See ya soon!!

Goggans :)

Monday 4/27-Thursday 4/30

Good Morning 6th Graders!! (just like I used to write on the board every day:))

Hope you all are doing great!!

  1. Reading: At the beginning of Chapter 4 of Flush, the narrator desctibes the lawyer as looking “at least 1,000 years old.” What is the literary term for extreme exagerattion? Send your answer to me in your next writing/journal entry. You should also include the narrator of the story, the point-of-view, and plot summary of what you’ve read/listened to. It only takes a few minutes. The reader is really interesting and fast. I just started part 6. It’s really getiing good!!

      2. Writing: Send me your journal entries. It’s simple: write down what’s going on in your daily life, how your feeling, and anything like that that you wish to include. If you’d rather not write about your personal life, then just write about the book Flush (see last sentnece of section 1 above).

May 4th through 7th

1.Just keep reading (or listening to) Flush!! It’s really good!! unless I sent you something else to read.

You should be at least to part 6. If not, then just sit down and listen—the sections are only 30 minutes long (and that’s about 3 chapters).

May 18th to 21st   Last week of School!!

If you need to do any reading/listening this week, then do that please.

And if you have anything writings or journal entries to turn in, the do that as well please.

See assignments above if you don’t know yet what’s expected.

Well this about wraps it up!

But. . .

Continue to write about what’s going on with you over the summer! Once a week, once a day, or whenever. It’d be best if you made a little schedule like “Oooh It’s Monday! I need to write about what’s been going on.” Or something like that. It’s just important to write things down. Your lives are so important in the world. Like Leslie M. Silko says

“Stories are all we have you see. We don’t have anything if we don’t have the stories.”

And your lives are daily stories!! So write them down and save them!!

Stay Safe & Take Care!

See Ya Soon!!

Love,Goggans

Also, I’ll continue to post things for you to read and stuff over the summer, so if you want to stay active and find interesting stories and activities, then keep checking this page every week. :)
